The Safari Collection

The Safari Collection is also the proud owner of four distinct lodges in some of Kenya’s most spectacular locations, including Giraffe Manor, Solio Lodge, Sasaab and Sala’s Camp. Our team has over 20 years’ experience in designing unique and unforgettable tailor-made safaris in East Africa.

Giraffe Manor

One of the most unique places to stay in the world, Giraffe Manor blends extraordinary wildlife encounters with exquisite hospitality and a long-term commitment to giraffe conservation. The historic manor house is set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi and is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings.

One of the most fascinating things about Giraffe Manor is its resident herd of Rothschild’s giraffes who may visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary. The Rothschild’s species of giraffe was once highly endangered, but Giraffe Manor has long been part of a breeding programme which has successfully grown their numbers in the wild.

Giraffe Manor is the embodiment of classic, romantic Kenya. Full of character, this stately old home perfectly reflects the glamour and charm of the traditional safari era and provides a magical setting for visitors to begin their Kenyan adventure. The original manor was built in 1932 and has six rooms, three of which were renovated in 2019: Betty (double), Lynn (double/twin), Daisy (double/twin), Jock (double/twin), Marlon (double/twin) and the Karen Blixen Suite (double/twin/family).

In 2011, the current owners built the Garden Manor, a smaller replica of the original manor, with six rooms: Salma (twin/double), Edd (double), Arlene (double), Helen (double/twin), Kelly (twin/double/triple) and the Finch Hatton Suite (double/twin/family). It is possible to put extra beds in some rooms.

Activities to enjoy during your stay include:

  • Meet & Feed the rare Rothschild’s giraffes

  • Afternoon high tea in the manor garden while resident giraffes and warthogs forage nearby (daily from 5pm onward)

  • Enjoy a spa treatment in the garden

  • Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage in the nearby Nairobi National Park where baby elephants can be adopted

  • Step back in time and visit the Karen Blixen Museum in the house that was used in the movie ‘Out of Africa’

Sala’s Camp

Sala’s camp is located at the convergence of the Sand and Keekorok Rivers, in the heart of the Masai Mara. It is perfectly situated as the first Mara property to welcome the annual wildebeest migration, from July to September, when over a million gnus pour into the Masai Mara from the Serengeti.

Sala’s Camp received a major makeover in 2016 and now boasts seven large, new tents and can accommodate up to 22 people. There are three superior tents, two honeymoon tents and two family tents. Bathrooms have hot rainfall showers and flushing toilets. Some of the tents have solar heated water while others use wood-fired ‘kuni boosters’. Electricity is solar powered, with a generator for back-up.

Activities whilst in camp include game drives in one of the world’s most prolific wildlife areas. The Masai Mara is home to Africa’s ‘Big Five’, as well as the world-famous annual migration of wildebeest. Star gazing is superb here. Admire the birdlife on nature walks within the camp or play volleyball in the Sand River (seasonal). For more information please read our activities and extras document.

The local Maasai are keen to teach their traditions and will show children how to throw a ‘rungu’, tie a ‘shuka’ and make a bow
& arrow. Activities also include searching for the ‘toothbrush tree’, spotting the ‘Little Five’ and the ‘Ugly Five’ on game drives,
and finding spoor in the riverbed. Special meals can be made by prior arrangement.
